RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Validation of treatments with individually prescribed homeopathic medicines is a challenging task. A prognostic homeopathic patient questionnaire containing 140 keynote symptoms (highly characteristic of a specific homeopathic medicine) and an electronic algorithm to process the answers were used in 2 clinical studies. The algorithm outcome, based on total symptom scores, indicated 1 of 11 pre-selected homeopathic medicines for women with premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMS/PMDD). Aims were (1) to estimate the prognostic values of keynote symptoms and (2) to evaluate the reliability of the homeopathic medicine ranking in the algorithm outcome. METHODS: The prevalence of specific keynote symptoms was calculated in 145 women diagnosed with PMS/PMDD and in 40 included women with favorable outcomes using 1 of the 11 homeopathic medicines. Likelihood ratios (LRs) of the keynote symptoms were calculated. Pearson's correlations were calculated between 2 sets of total algorithm scores for 11 homeopathic medicines, obtained at 2 time points. RESULTS: (1) A positive prognostic value (LR ≥ 1.5) was found in 34 keynote symptoms with a prevalence of 10-40%, with 10 symptoms already being connected to the corresponding homeopathic medicine in the algorithm. For example, the symptom 'common cold of the nose before menstruation' indicated Magnesium carbonicum with LR = 7.47 (confidence interval (CI) 3.90-14.28). (2) Pearson's correlations for the reliability evaluation varied from 0.69 to 0.84. CONCLUSIONS: Recommendations can be made to improve the PMS algorithm with more accurate keynote symptoms. The prognostic questionnaire proved a reliable tool to rank 11 homeopathic medicines by total scores, based on keynote symptoms. This PMS algorithm can be used for the treatment of PMS/PMDD in clinical practice.

This study looked at organic production, in addition to the use of homeopathic preparations, in order to increase biomass and flavonoid content in dioecious plants of Baccharis genistelloides. The adopted treatments were: water control, control with 70% alcohol, Phosphorus 12CH, Sulphur 6CH and a combination of them. Phenotypic changes were recorded for the growth analysis, performed biweekly for 60 days, of the morphological features, such as height, number of branches, length of the main branch, diameter of the stem and median stem wing. At harvest, we measured the fresh/dry phytomass and root volume. Subsequently, we quantified the content of total flavonoids according to the analyses required by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia. The experiment was evaluated in a randomized block design, and its averages were evaluated by the Tukey's test and environmental variation coefficient to estimate plasticity. As for the study of plant growth over time, there was a simple linear increase for most of the variables in both genders. We could detect phenotypic plasticity traits in most features analyzed. According to these results in both genders, 60 days after inoculation are sufficient to obtain raw material with acceptable level of flavonoids, as well as pathogenesis and similar effects in the application of homeopathic preparations of Phosphorus 12CH, Sulphur 6CH and their combination. Phytomass and content of total flavonoids were similar between the dioecious plants during the study period.

Homeopathy is based on the principle of cure by similarity and on the prescription of minimal doses and single medicine to healthy individuals. In plants, performing treatments on the basis of drug dynamisation has increased in the recent decades. In these treatments, it is necessary to conduct a pathogenetic experimentation in order to apply homeopathic principles and to consolidate homeopathic plant material. Through a pathogenetic test with bean plants treated daily by pulverization and irrigation, using diluted and dynamized essential oil of Eucalyptus citriodora - (dilutions: 0.5 and 1%) (oil dynamisation: 12 and 30CH) -, there appeared external symptoms similar to those symptoms caused by Pseudocercospora griseola, i.e., the causal agent of angular leaf spot of bean. The pathogenetics study with E. citriodora raises the possibility of its application to control angular leaf spot in bean plants in accordance with the homeopathic principle of cure by similarity.

Introduction: It is difficult to carry out clinical trials with homeopathy, and therefore the controversy about its efficiency continues. There is no description, so far, about the impact of homeopathy on chicken pox. Patients and methods: Exploratory prospective cohort study. Follow up on 160 children less than 15 years of age in three groups treated with homeopathy (group 1), conventional treatment (group3) or both (group 2). The subjects where followed up until the end of convalescence. These were Number of skin lesions on the thorax, and evolution of symptoms as fever, itching, discomfort, sleep disorder, hunger and headache was analyzed. Results: The group treated with homeopathy had an age older than (5.6 years vs. 4.2 yrs in group 3), with no differences in the presence of children with fever, itching and number of lesions at the first visit. In the group treated with homeopathy, respect to the one that received symptomatic treatment there was a significant lower duration of fever (1.4 vs. 2.4 days), less length of the scratching lesions (1.4 vs. 1.8 days) and in the duration of the lesions (of 6.6 in the group treated with homeopathy and 9.2 days in the symptomatic group), without any modification in the rest of the variables. Conclusions: In this exploratory observational study the homeopathic treatment indicates a possible benefit in reducing the symptoms and the duration of the chicken pox (AU)
